On 1 October 2019, pupils and students gathered in Ibadan for a special Independence Day celebration designed to combine education, creativity and entertainment.
Organised by Benjamin French Language International School in partnership with Raypower 95.1 FM Ibadan, the Independence Funfair was held at De-Vine International Hotels and Towers, Meridian, Apata, Ibadan.
The event gave young Nigerians an opportunity to celebrate their country while learning, developing their talents and interacting with other students.
Celebrating Independence Through Learning
Nigeria’s Independence Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s history, celebrate its achievements and encourage citizens to contribute to its future.
For young people, understanding the meaning of independence is especially important. It helps them appreciate the sacrifices made by previous generations and recognise their responsibility in shaping the nation’s next chapter.
The 2019 Independence Funfair transformed this national celebration into an engaging experience for pupils and students.
Rather than limiting the event to speeches, the organisers created activities that encouraged participants to think, learn, compete and express themselves.
Combining Education and Entertainment
The funfair featured quizzes, debates, competitions, cultural dances, lectures, games, music, comedy and swimming.
These activities provided different opportunities for participants to demonstrate their knowledge, confidence, creativity and teamwork.
Quizzes and debates encouraged students to think critically and communicate their ideas. Cultural performances helped them appreciate Nigeria’s diversity and heritage, while games and entertainment created an atmosphere in which participants could connect and celebrate together.

Discovering and Encouraging Young Talent
Every young person has abilities that can be developed when the right platform is provided.

Expanding Students’ Horizons
One of the major highlights of the event was the opportunity for five participants to be selected for a fully sponsored 45-day excursion to a Francophone country.
Such exposure can have a lasting impact on young people. Travelling to a different country gives students an opportunity to experience another culture, practise a new language and develop a broader understanding of the world.
The initiative also reflected the organisers’ commitment to French-language education and international exposure.
For the selected participants, the excursion represented more than a prize. It was an opportunity for learning, cultural exchange and personal development.
Promoting Unity Among Young Nigerians
Nigeria is home to hundreds of ethnic groups, languages and cultural traditions. Events that bring young people together help them appreciate this diversity while recognising their shared national identity.
Through cultural performances and group activities, the Independence Funfair celebrated the differences that make Nigeria unique and the common values that can unite its people.
